Bowie's Area...

Underground

Recently I was watching Labyrinth again, as is my way, and actually listened to the Bowie-singing in the opening where Sarah is running through the rain instead of looking for the bulges in the backgrounds. It hit one fairly obvious line that made me think "Did they actually just say that in a Jim Hensen movie?" followed almost immediately by "How could I not have caught that earlier?" and so the Areaologists were gathered, and they gathered their areas, and here we have the lyrics to David Bowie's Underground from the Labyrinth soundtrack.

No one can blame you for walking away
True, I imagine a package like that is kind of intimidating.

But too much rejection, uh huh...
Okay, typical love song sort of line, but now listen carefully...

No love injection
Not if they want to keep the PG rating, anyway.

Life can be easy
So can you. Jennifer Connelly, we're singing in your direction here.

It's not always swell
That's not what the tights say. It looks like it's always swell.

Don't tell me truth hurts, little girl
'cause it hurts like hell
A little girl, and what's swell in those tights? At the very least it'll be sore in the morning.

But down in the underground
This part is all about Going Down. (As the hands say so luridly.)

You'll find someone true
And the "truth" hurts. So that's what he was calling it in the 80s.

Down in the Underground
What happened to the "But" ?

A land serene, a crystal moon
Oh. Pull your tights back up. We don't need that kind of moon.

A-ha
You can't tell from the text, but this is one of those falsetto bits that sound like he got kicked in the crystals.

It's only forever
Hurray for stamina!

Not long at all
We've seen it, it's long!

Lost and Lonely
If you're getting lost in there, she must be pretty easy after all.

That's underground, underground
Under where?
Exactly.
