These are just things I write, okay? Sometimes they're profound insights or funny stories and I'm really proud of them. Other times it's mindless rhetoric that I've since completely changed my mind about and am ashamed of. But most of the time it's just words.

1. Somebody says something stupid in a forum, chatroom, guestbook, or other sort of online public discussion thing. Usually something that would be easily known if they'd just read a few of the threads, or were passingly familiar with the subject of the discussion.

2. Somebody else corrects them. This is optionally accompanied by insults, usually dependant on how stupid or annoying the first person was.

3. The first person responds with some variation of "I have a life. Anybody who corrects me must be a complete loser who just sits in front of their computer all day and doesn't have any friends and never has sex."

It's step three that I'd like to talk about today. Does dating preclude one from requiring the basic level of knowledge or intelligence on a topic? If you have so much of a "life" go do your "having a life" stuff and leave us alone. Or could it be that the people who corrected you have other things they enjoy doing too, but spend a little time online every now and then just as you do? If having a social life and writing stuff online are mutually exclusive I never what to read anybody online accusing somebody else of not having a life, because you must not have one either!

I'm awfully vitrolic on this topic today, considering that I've been neither an accusor nor accusee of that sort of thing in recent memory. But there are a couple forums I like to read, and I've seen it happen a lot. It's stupid. If "Oh yeah, well I get laid and you don't," is the best support for your position you can come up with... Well, I'm not saying you should change your opinions but you should definately consider shutting the hell up.
(Unless the arguement you're using that for is actually about how to get laid, or something. But you know what I mean.)
